Attention science fiction aficionados, tech enthusiasts, and legal wizards! GikII, the renowned international workshop at the nexus of law, technology, and popular culture, is back with a bang for its highly anticipated 2023 edition. This year, we’re thrilled to announce that the vibrant city of Utrecht, Netherlands, where Utrecht University’s Law School and its Governing the Digital Society focus area will play hosts to this extravaganza of geekiness. Prepare to embark on a mind-bending journey through the realms of imagination and intellectual inquiry!

GikII is the birthplace of geek law, where the unthinkable becomes thinkable, and the unimaginable becomes imaginable. We invite you to join us as we explore the ever-evolving relationship between law, technology, and popular culture, and dissect the fascinating interplay that shapes our present and future. This year’s workshop promises to be an unforgettable experience, filled with lively debates, mind-expanding discussions, and ample opportunities to geek out!

We welcome papers, presentations, and interactive sessions on a wide range of riveting topics.Our quest for knowledge encompasses a vast array of geeky domains, including, but not limited to:

Whether it’s the legal implications of cosplay, the copyright issues surrounding fanfiction, or the challenges of regulating time-travelling DeLoreans, we’re eager to hear your unique perspectives.

GikII embraces diversity and inclusivity, bringing together scholars, practitioners, fans, and enthusiasts from around the globe. So, dust off your lightsabers, unpack your wizard robes, and prepare to delve into the captivating realm where law meets geekdom.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit a 300-500 word abstract outlining your paper or presentation, along with your contact information and a short bio, to a.guadamuz@sussex.ac.uk by the submission deadline of July 31, 2023. Your submission should take into account that Gikii favours short presentations (12 minutes max), so try to make your subject as concise as possible. We’ll accept or reject papers within days so that you can plan your trip. Accepted speakers and other participants are expected to fund themselves.

We eagerly await your geekiest ideas, dazzling insights, and groundbreaking research! Together, let’s shape the future of geek law and unlock the hidden possibilities that lie within our favourite realms of popular culture.

Information about hybrid requirements: While we expect most papers to be in person, we are willing to accommodate some online presentations if we accept your paper.
